About The Duke

Our 16th Century Inn

A Rich History

The Duke on the Test has a curious history, with whispers of hidden passageways and wolf-whistling mynah birds (yes, really!). Our walls are full of memories dating back to as early as the 1500s. The Duke as you know it today has been through many identities, including The Admiral Vernon, The Duke of Cumberland, and The Duke's Head!

A Reimagined Future

Today, The Duke on the Test retains much of the same historic charm that made it a much-loved watering hole centuries ago. But it has a modern twist. Reimagined for the 21st century, our cosy inn brings the best of the Test to the fore. Local produce and local talent have come together to bring you impeccable service, comforting, creative dishes, and elegant bedrooms, all in a relaxed, contemporary environment.

Testimonials

The end result of the work is a triumph; every aspect of the site and the building looks stunning and works together to make optimum use of everything there.

The Hot Smoked “Chalk Stream” Trout was simply divine and the tastiest dish I have experienced in a very long time.

The fresh food served was a perfect match for the setting; completing the experience for us on the evening, and we will be back!

What amazing place to visit. This will now be my number one go to establishment.
