The Duke is Turning 3… Or is it?

July 2nd, 2025

The Duke on the Test will be celebrating its third birthday on the 4th July. However, the history of The Duke dates back over 440 years!

If our walls could talk, they would have stories to tell from over four centuries of life on the banks of the River Test. Long before it was The Duke on the Test, this spot was known as ‘The Three Tuns’, which opened as a hostelry in 1583.

Over the years, it was known by many different names, including The Admiral Vernon, The Duke of Cumberland, and most recently, The Duke on the Test.

There are many myths surrounding The Duke, including whispers of secret passageways under the original building, potentially used by smugglers. In more recent history, many patrons remember and recount tales of a very cheeky resident mynah bird who delighted (and surprised) guests with wolf whistles and naughty comments.

After a brief closure and thoughtful renovation, The Duke re-opened in 2022, blending its rich history with all the comfort and hospitality of a modern country inn.

Today, whether you are joining us for a delicious lunch, a fireside pint, or an overnight stay in one of our 12 luxurious bedrooms, you are part of a story that has been unfolding for over 440 years!

So join us on the 8th July as we raise a glass to celebrate our third birthday as The Duke on the Test. We’re toasting not just the years gone by but all of you who help keep the spirit of this beautiful place alive. Here’s to many more!

Testimonials

The end result of the work is a triumph; every aspect of the site and the building looks stunning and works together to make optimum use of everything there.

The Hot Smoked “Chalk Stream” Trout was simply divine and the tastiest dish I have experienced in a very long time.

The fresh food served was a perfect match for the setting; completing the experience for us on the evening, and we will be back!

What amazing place to visit. This will now be my number one go to establishment.
