Norman Thelwell: The Artist Behind The Duke's Murals
The eagle-eyed amongst our guests might have spotted that the murals we have in The Duke on the Test (above the bar and in the W/C) are enlarged versions of Norman Thelwell's work.
Norman Thelwell (who was also widely known as simply Thelwell) was an English cartoonist with a fascinating life.
He spent the last quarter century of his life living near Romsey and was known to visit The Duke on the Test on many an occasion!
Thelwell is famous for his humorous illustrations of pony adventures, angling, and the countryside. He wrote many books including Angels on Horseback, Plankbridge by a Pool, and Thelwell Country, just to name a few.
Merrylegs The Movie is in production for 2023 and tells the many adventures of Merrylegs and Penelope.
The Duke on the Test is proud to give a nod to this iconic artist in our historic Romsey building with his fantastic painting of The Dukes Head as it was once known.
