Norman Thelwell Centenary Exhibition at Mottisfont

December 19th, 2022

Norman Thelwell Centenary Exhibition at Mottisfont

Norman Thelwell is possibly the most popular cartoonist in Britain, since the Second World War.

January 2023 marks Norman Thelwell’s centenary. The National Trust is holding an exhibition in Mottisfont to celebrate the legacy of the cartoonist, who lived in Test Valley for 25 years.

The exhibition website states - "Thelwell's trademark ponies and other humorous illustrations will be on show, alongside exquisitely-rendered local landscapes. Childhood sketches begin a journey through his life’s work, exploring environmental concerns, social observations and an enduring love of the countryside."

We look forward to visiting the exhibition!

Norman Thelwell at The Duke on the Test

As he was local to the area, living in Test Valley, Norman Thelwell used to visit The Duke on the Test pub back when it was 'The Duke's Head'!

As many of you know, we have an impressive mural of Thelwell’s illustration of The Duke which is proudly displayed above our bar. We also have one of his amusing caricatures in our restroom. If you are hoping to pop by Thelwell’s exhibition, then why not make a day of it by visiting his artwork at The Duke? Enjoy locally sourced fare, delectable drinks and stay in one of our luxury en-suite rooms. Dogs are welcome in designated areas, and you can enjoy a lovely jaunt along Romsey’s most popular trails.

Take a look at one of Thelwell's impressive illustration above our bar:

Testimonials

The end result of the work is a triumph; every aspect of the site and the building looks stunning and works together to make optimum use of everything there.

The Hot Smoked “Chalk Stream” Trout was simply divine and the tastiest dish I have experienced in a very long time.

The fresh food served was a perfect match for the setting; completing the experience for us on the evening, and we will be back!

What amazing place to visit. This will now be my number one go to establishment.
